2017 WORLD TB DAY COMMEMORATION

Background

World TB Day (WTBD) is commemorated every March 24. This is the day in 1882 when the TB bacilli was discovered that paved the way for the standard diagnosis and treatment of TB disease. Every year, the Department of Health through the National TB Program of the Disease Prevention and Control Bureau with the Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis (PhilCAT) as the organizing entity, conducts advocacy activities to increase awareness among the general population about the disease and encourage both the public and private sectors to join the health sector in the fight against TB.

This year marks the start of the paradigm shift from TB control to elimination and the implementation of the 2017-2022 Philippine Strategic TB Elimination Plan 1 (PhilSTEP 1). Advocacy for unified effort is needed for us to be able to implement and achieve the objectives of PhilSTEP 1.

This WTBD activity is a very good venue for a call to unified action among the participating entities. This commemoration is organized by PHILCAT in partnership with the Department of Health, World Vision Development Foundation Incorporated and Philippine Business for Social Progress. It will be conducted on March 24, 2017 at the Quezon Institute Compound, Quezon City with the local theme: END TB: “SAMA-SAMANG TULDUKAN ANG TB!” Program will start with the Eucharistic celebration at 3:00 pm and the main program follows until 8pm.
